In 1880 cattlemen with the Hashknife Cattle Company set up their headquarters here on the banks of Cedar Creek. It was at a meeting that December with representatives from the Texas & Pacific Railroad that the new city of Abilene was born in a dugout here at Cedar Cottage next to the first well in the area.

The Texas Historical Commission describes the current house as a Tudor Revival built in 1929. Abilene Christian College had just relocated to its new campus four blocks away and this cottage was built with surplus bricks from ACC’s Administration Building.

Visiting Cedar Cottage today, guests can easily explore Abilene’s past in historic downtown, catch a game or event at one of our three universities, and enjoy a concert or rodeo at the Expo Center.
